The Bandpass Filter
The bandpass filter is a circuit designed to transmit signals whose frequencies fall within a specific passband, while heavily attenuating frequencies outside this range. It is defined by a low cutoff frequency and a high cutoff frequency . It is fundamental in communication systems for isolating the signal of interest.
The Elementary Passive Filters
Passive filters use only passive components (Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors) and are classified as follows:
RC Filter (Resistor-Capacitor Filter)
The RC filter is the simplest filter (first order). It is commonly used in low-pass or high-pass configurations. Its simplicity is an asset.
RL Filter (Resistor-Inductor Filter)
The RL filter uses a resistor (R) and an inductor (L). Less common than the RC filter, it is sometimes used in power applications.
LC Filter (Inductor-Capacitor Filter)
The LC filter (or resonant circuit) uses an inductor (L) and a capacitor (C). It can form a higher-order LC bandpass filter. LC filters offer a steeper attenuation slope and are more power-efficient.
Active Filters
Active Low Pass Filter
An active low pass filter incorporates an operational amplifier (Op-Amp). The Op-Amp allows for the addition of voltage gain and improves stage isolation. This allows for the construction of higher-order filters with much steeper attenuation slopes without requiring inductors.
Leave a field blank to calculate its value.
-Fc = 1/(2π√(LC))
C = 1 /((2πF)² × L)
L = 1 /((2πF)² × C)
